Buy a ticket. Grab an inner tube. Step onto a short ski lift that carries you up a couple hundred feet. At the top, sit or lie down on your inner tube. Speed down a lane sculpted into the snow. Repeat until your cheeks hurt from smiling and laughing so much.
Stepping up into a horse-drawn sleigh feels like stepping back in time. And it is. For the first several decades that white settlers lived in Jackson Hole, horse-drawn sleighs were the best way to get around the valley during the winter. Several local outfitters keep this part of our history alive by offering rides throughout the winter. Load up, snuggle into blankets, sip hot chocolate, and sleigh back in time.
Jackson Hole isn’t as famous for its Nordic skiing as it is for its alpine skiing, but it should be. Whether you want a heart-pumping workout, to ski along a creek in solitude, or to be in the shadow of the Tetons, there’s a groomed trail for you.
For some, one of the joys of cross-country skiing is that you’re not limited to trails. This is a sport that encourages exploration. If you’re in this category, your options are pretty much endless, from cross-country skiing around glacial moraines left by ice that receded tens of thousands of years ago, taking forest service roads closed to cars for the season, skiing along the banks of a river or creek, or discovering a frozen backcountry lake or historic homestead cabin.
With deeply treaded and sometimes studded tires as wide as 5 inches, a fat bike can ride on any of the more than 40 fat-bike-friendly groomed trails in Jackson Hole and Teton Valley. From navigating the pathway system in town to long, open scenic stretches with Teton views to singletrack mountainous trails that get your adrenaline pumping, fat biking is a great way to explore towns, mountains, and scenery and a unique option for playing on snow.
